Mumtaz
Born: 31 July 1947
Mumtaz is one of those rare Bollywood legends who genuinely earned her superstar status through sheer talent and screen presence. Born in Hyderabad in 1947, she started as a child actor but had to grind through B-grade films and typecasting as a "stunt film heroine" before breaking through in the late '60s. Once she hit her stride with *Do Raaste* in 1969, there was no stopping her—she became one of the highest-paid and most sought-after actresses of her era. Films like *Khilona*, *Sachaa Jhutha*, *Hare Rama Hare Krishna*, and *Aap Ki Kasam* showcased her range and made her a household name, and she even bagged a Filmfare Award for Best Actress. By the mid-'70s, she was practically running Bollywood. What made Mumtaz special was her ability to bring fire to every role—she wasn't content playing demure heroines, and audiences loved her for it. She carved out a niche playing feisty, vivacious women in romantic and action dramas, proving that female leads could be complex and captivating. After an impressive run through the '70s, she took a 13-year break and returned briefly in 1990 with *Aandhiyan* before retiring for good. These days, Mumtaz is settled in London with her businessman husband Mayur Madhvani and their two daughters, but her legacy in Hindi cinema remains untouchable. The 1997 Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award was just the film industry's way of saying thank you to an actress who genuinely changed the game.
