5.8/10Critic Score

There's a raw moral urgency at the heart of *Tangewala* that deserves recognition, even if the film doesn't always know how to channel it effectively. The story—rooted in the exploitation of women and the arbitrary cruelty of feudal power—taps into genuine tragedy, and the narrative spine of Raju's helplessness against systemic injustice carries weight. The performances, particularly in the quieter moments when Gauri confronts her devastated reality, occasionally transcend the melodramatic framework the film operates within. However, director's handling of these heavy themes often veers toward the overwrought; there are scenes that feel manipulative rather than moving, where music swells and emotions are amplified rather than earned through restraint.

What hampers the film most is its uneven pacing and the somewhat predictable trajectory once the central betrayal unfolds. The Thakur functions less as a character and more as a symbol of villainy, and while that thematic clarity has its place, it leaves little room for the moral complexity that might've elevated this beyond period-piece melodrama. Raju's arrest subplot, meant to be the climax of injustice, feels rushed, and the film never quite resolves the tension between being a family drama and a social commentary. The technical execution is competent—the village setting is rendered convincingly—but nothing visually distinctive enough to compensate for the narrative stumbles. It's a film that means well and contains moments

Storyline

Raju's world shatters when the despicable Zamindar Thakur—a boozy, manipulative landlord—orchestrates a vicious scheme to destroy his family out of pure spite. The Thakur seduces Raju's innocent sister Gauri with fake promises, marrying her in a fake temple ceremony with his corrupt munimji posing as a priest. When Gauri shows up pregnant and begging for legitimacy, the Thakur coldly denies everything, and his munimji backs up the lie—leaving the girl utterly shattered and the family's honor in ruins.

Gauri's pain only deepens when she gives birth to a fatherless son, and things get even messier when she bolts from an arranged remarriage that could've saved her reputation. Raju's own life gets stuck in limbo—his love for the beautiful Paro keeps getting pushed aside, his mother's heartbreak over her absent husband never heals, and now the whole family has to uproot and leave the village all over again. Desperate to restore his sister's dignity, Raju storms back to confront the Thakur, but ends up arrested instead—thrown into jail and powerless while Gauri, his mother, and his little nephew are left to survive alone in the world.
