Review
There's a rawness to *Kathputli* that cuts deep—a story about orphans bound by desperation and love, where every sacrifice feels like a wound that refuses to close. Director's handling of Nisha's ordeal is unflinching, almost too honest for comfort, and that's precisely what makes it matter. The performances carry genuine weight; you feel the characters' desperation in their silences more than their words. When Nisha turns to her boss out of pure helplessness, the scene doesn't exploit her vulnerability—it indicts the world that forces such impossible choices on women with nothing left to lose. The chemistry between the leads crackles with an intensity born from shared suffering, and by the time Vishal discovers the truth about his son, you're invested in their redemption as much as they are.
Where *Kathputli* stumbles is in its second half's melodrama. The redemption arc, while emotionally satisfying, feels somewhat compressed—Vishal's transformation from abandonment to devotion happens almost too conveniently once Roma reveals the truth. The climax, with Nisha's act of self-defense and the court's acquittal, resolves too neatly for a film that spent so much time in moral greyness. There's also an unevenness in tone; some scenes luxuriate in tragedy while others rush through their emotional potential. Yet despite these flaws, there's something undeniably moving about watching broken people choose each other, over and over again, even when the world gives them every reason n
Storyline
Nisha's an orphan working a dead-end job when Vishal, another orphan, moves in next door and completely sweeps her off her feet! They fall madly in love, but then tragedy strikes—a car accident leaves Vishal badly hurt and needing emergency surgery that costs Rs. 5000 they don't have. Desperate to save him, Nisha turns to her creepy boss for help, and he takes disgusting advantage of her desperation.
After Vishal's operation, a shattered Nisha tries to end it all but gets rescued by Roma, a wealthy woman who becomes her guardian angel! She sends Nisha away to Delhi to have her baby in secret, and three years later when Vishal moves there for his dream job, everything gets beautifully complicated—he discovers the kid he's adopted is actually his own son with Nisha! When he finds out the truth, he spirals and abandons them both, but then Munna (their son) gets hit by a car and Vishal saves him, triggering a massive awakening about what really matters.
The pieces finally fall into place when Vishal learns from Roma about Nisha's sacrifice and the horrifying abuse she endured! Meanwhile, Nisha's vile boss tries blackmailing her one last time, and she snaps—she kills him in self-defense and gets arrested, but Vishal rushes to the jail with a completely changed heart and stands by her side! The court acquits her, and the film ends with Vishal finally embracing both Nisha and Munna as his real family, proving that love and sacrifice can conquer absolutely everything.
