Nirupa Roy
Born: 4 January 1930
Nirupa Roy was a powerhouse of Hindi cinema who carved out an incredible 53-year career playing some of the most emotionally resonant roles in Bollywood history. Born Kokila Kishorechandra Bulsara in Bulsar, she appeared in over 250 films and became legendary for her ability to portray deep maternal and tragic characters—so much so that she earned the nickname "Queen of Misery." Roy's talent was consistently recognized with three Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Awards for her work in Munimji, Chhaya, and Shehnai, cementing her status as one of Hindi cinema's most respected performers. Her contributions didn't go unnoticed in her later years either, as she received the prestigious Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004, just months before her passing. What made Nirupa Roy truly special was her ability to bring authenticity and heartfelt emotion to every role she took on, whether playing a suffering mother or a woman facing life's hardships. She had a gift for making audiences feel the weight of her character's pain, which became her signature style and what audiences loved most about her work. Throughout the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, Roy remained a constant presence in Hindi films, bringing gravitas to countless productions. Even as she transitioned into character roles later in her career, continuing to act until 1999, she maintained the same level of dedication and emotional depth that had made her a beloved figure in Indian cinema for generations.
