Dara Singh

Dara Singh

Born: 19 November 1928

Dara Singh was a legendary figure who dominated both the wrestling ring and the silver screen, making him one of Bollywood's most unique stars. Before conquering Hindi cinema, he was an absolute powerhouse in international wrestling, earning the title "Rustam-e-Hind" and becoming world champion in 1968 by defeating the legendary Lou Thesz. His transition to films in the 1950s proved just as successful—he appeared in over 100 Hindi and Punjabi films, building a reputation as the go-to guy for roles that required strength, heroism, and righteousness. His most iconic moment came with his portrayal of Hanuman in the 1976 film Bajrangbali and later in the massively popular TV series Ramayan (1987–1988), which cemented his place in Indian pop culture history. His contributions were recognized with the Padma Shri in 1996, and he even made history as the first sportsperson to serve in the Rajya Sabha from 2003 to 2009. What made Dara Singh truly special was his ability to embody the archetypal Indian hero—whether flexing muscles on screen or delivering powerful performances in religious and mythological roles. He brought an authenticity to his characters that resonated deeply with audiences, especially in his portrayals of gods and virtuous warriors. His legacy extends far beyond Bollywood; in 2018, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame's Legacy wing, a fitting tribute to his wrestling prowess. Though his film career spanned from 1950 to 2012, it's his larger-than-life persona and the roles he chose that ensured he remained a beloved figure in Indian cinema and culture long after the credits rolled.
