Mulzim

Review

5/10Critic Score

"Mulzim" operates within the redemption-through-love framework that defined mid-era Hindi cinema, and while it commits fully to this melodramatic thesis, the execution feels narratively overstuffed. The film's core strength lies in its genuine thematic ambition—the tension between systemic justice and personal reformation carries real weight, and the performances, particularly in moments between Vijay and Superintendent Sharda, capture an earnestness that elevates the material beyond typical revenge potboilers. However, the director struggles to balance multiple plot threads; the story careens from redemption arc to framed murder to death row conspiracy with such velocity that emotional stakes dilute rather than compound. The final act's violence, while visually committed, feels unearned given how much narrative ground was already covered.

What's most frustrating is recognizing the film's better version struggling beneath the surface. The sacrifice motifs—Neeraj's death, Sharda's voluntary surrender, Vijay's transformation—suggest a filmmaker interested in exploring whether society can truly absorb reformed criminals. Yet these ideas get buried under melodramatic excess: the Ranjeet villain plot, Kamla's convenient marriage, the multiple frame-jobs. The performances deserve better scaffolding; actors are clearly capable of nuance, but the script doesn't grant them breathing room. For all its passionate conviction about redemption's possibility, "Mulzim" ironically undermines

Storyline

Vijay's a hardcore ex-con with a genuinely raw edge, and when he lands in jail on Independence Day, he crosses paths with the idealistic Superintendent Sharda and her compassionate friend Mala, who believe even the worst criminals deserve redemption through love and care. They take on the challenge of reforming this dangerous guy, and something clicks—Vijay transforms, gets out on parole, and commits to building a hospital for the poor with his fiancée Dr. Rekha. But then his bitter enemy Ranjeet swoops in, murders Rekha, and pins the crime on Vijay to steal the hospital land for himself!

Mala and Sharda fight to reopen the case and free Vijay, and he hits the streets seeking revenge against Ranjeet—only to discover his own sister Kamla is now married to him as a shield against Vijay's wrath. Things spiral when Ranjeet hires a goon to attack Kamla, Vijay saves her, and the villain frames our hero for the goon's death, landing him on death row with a verdict hanging over his head. Neeraj, the tough inspector, finally cracks the real case but gets kidnapped along with Mala and Kamla, leaving Vijay desperate and cornered.

Vijay busts out of his cell and charges at Ranjeet in a brutal showdown, but it's Superintendent Sharda who delivers the final blow, taking Ranjeet down and turning herself in for justice. The film wraps up beautifully—Neeraj dies protecting Vijay's escape—and our redeemed hero finally gets his chance at happiness with Mala, proving that redemption and love truly conquer all!
