4/10Critic Score

"Khooni Mahal" operates within the familiar confines of Indian supernatural horror, trading originality for atmospheric setup—a possessed landlord, a cursed mansion, a trapped couple. Director Anurag Kashyap's execution, however, feels derivative and emotionally hollow. The premise itself isn't without merit: the backstory of Jagira's rampage carries potential for exploring themes of collective guilt and karmic retribution. Yet the film squanders this by defaulting to jump-scares and CGI spectacle rather than psychological tension. The performances, particularly from the lead couple, lack the vulnerability needed to make their ordeal resonate; they react to horror rather than inhabiting it. What should have been a visceral nightmare becomes a paint-by-numbers haunted house exercise, where every supernatural beat arrives on schedule and without surprise.

The technical execution amplifies rather than masks these narrative shortcomings. Cinematography relies too heavily on shadows and false jump-scares, substituting style for substance—a common trap in low-budget horror that Kashyap's previous work suggests he understands but fails to avoid here. The sound design, potentially the genre's greatest asset, serves merely as punctuation rather than a character in itself. By the film's conclusion, when the couple inevitably becomes the mansion's next victims, we're meant to feel dread about the curse's perpetuation. Instead, we feel relief that the ordeal is over. Given that supernat

Storyline

A newly married couple stumbles into an abandoned mansion seeking shelter, completely unaware they're stepping into a nightmare that's been waiting decades to unleash itself. Years earlier, the landlord Jagira went absolutely berserk after being possessed by a vengeful spirit, massacring villagers left and right until the terrified community beat him to death in a fury. With his dying breath, Jagira curses everyone who dares to live under his roof, vowing to drag them straight to hell.

The young couple quickly realizes they've made a horrifying mistake as supernatural terror grips the house—doors slam on their own, shadows move with sinister purpose, and the malevolent ghost of Jagira begins hunting them relentlessly through the corridors. They're trapped, isolated, with nowhere to run as the angry spirit grows more violent and unstoppable, determined to fulfill his decades-old revenge on anyone foolish enough to inhabit his domain. The couple fights desperately to survive the night, but Jagira's rage is absolutely unstoppable.

The ghost's vengeance is complete as the couple becomes another tragic chapter in the mansion's blood-soaked history, their screams echoing through empty halls. Jagira finally finds his twisted satisfaction, his curse now cemented in stone—a chilling reminder that some evils never truly die and some debts are paid in blood across generations. The mansion stands silent once more, waiting patiently for the next unsuspecting souls who'll make the fatal mistake of seeking shelter within its cursed walls.
