4.8/10Critic Score

Kabrastan attempts to wrestle with a genuinely unsettling premise—a surgeon's murderous ambition triggering supernatural retribution—but the execution falters under the weight of tonal inconsistency and underdeveloped character psychology. Director's previous work averaging 4.0/10 suggests structural weaknesses, and this film doesn't break that pattern. The central conceit of Anthony's vengeful spirit as karmic punishment has promise, but the film treats the possession sequences as spectacle rather than exploring the genuine horror of culpability. The performances feel trapped between melodrama and genuine dread; the surgeon's descent should feel like watching a man psychologically disintegrate, yet instead we get conventional supernatural tropes—inexplicable violence and family trauma deployed as plot mechanisms rather than earned consequences. The screenplay conflates "relentless" with "repetitive," cycling through possession scenes without deepening our understanding of either William's original transgression or Anthony's spiritual anguish.

What ultimately undermines Kabrastan is its failure to commit to what could have been its strength: a morality play grounded in character rather than genre mechanics. The film wants to be both a surgical thriller and a ghost story, but straddles both without mastering either. Technically competent in its horror beats, yet narratively hollow—the supporting cast exists primarily to be victimized, transforming the narrative into a catalog

Storyline

This brilliant surgeon gets so obsessed with pulling off the ultimate heart transplant that he crosses a line nobody should ever cross—he straight-up murders an innocent man named Anthony to steal his heart! The transplant works like a dream, and William's patient survives, but the moment that fresh organ starts beating inside someone else's chest, all hell breaks loose. Anthony's spirit doesn't take kindly to being murdered, and it comes back swinging with a vengeance that's absolutely terrifying.

What makes this film so gripping is watching William's world completely implode as Anthony's ghost tears through his entire family with supernatural fury! Possessions, mysterious deaths, inexplicable violence—the haunting doesn't just target William, it spreads like a disease to everyone around him, pulling them all into this nightmare they can't wake up from. The tension keeps building as William realizes he can't hide from what he's done, and neither can anyone he loves.

The genius of it all is that William becomes a man completely trapped by his own ambition and the cosmic consequence of his crime! There's no escape, no redemption, just the relentless force of Anthony's rage consuming everything he holds dear. It's a perfect cautionary tale about how far you'll fall when you think you're above morality—haunting stuff that sticks with you long after the credits roll!
