6/10Critic Score

There's something fundamentally appealing about "Awwal Number"—a film that understands what makes our hearts race: the underdog story, the redemption arc, and the moment when personal rivalries dissolve in the face of something larger than ourselves. The narrative skeleton is solid; watching Sunny's humble respect for the embittered Ronny creates genuine emotional friction, and when terrorism threatens to derail everything, the stakes suddenly feel real. The climactic match-winning stroke works as a metaphor for how character and talent ultimately triumph over ego, and there's real beauty in Ronny's journey from villain to someone capable of growth. Yet the film struggles with pacing and tonal balance—it tries to juggle cricket rivalry, terrorism, police procedural, and patriotic fervor all at once, and not every thread gets the breathing room it deserves. The performances likely carry the film further than the direction does, with emotional moments that could resonate deeply if given space to land properly rather than being rushed toward the next plot point. "Awwal Number" is a film that reaches for something meaningful about heroism and humility, and it mostly gets there, even if the journey feels occasionally scattered.

What works most powerfully is how the film remembers that sports cinema, at its heart, is about the human experience—ambition, fear, redemption, belonging. When it stays focused on Sunny and Ronny's relationship and the cricket itself, you feel the emotion

Storyline

Sunny bursts onto the cricket scene and instantly becomes the golden boy, snatching the spotlight from the legendary Ronny in a move that absolutely crushes him. The veteran's ego can't handle being replaced, and he's consumed by jealousy while Sunny—the humble newcomer—actually looks up to him with genuine respect. Ronny plots his revenge, determined to destroy this kid's career before it even takes off.

But just as the tension between them reaches a boiling point, a sinister terrorist plot emerges that makes their personal drama look tiny! A bomb is set to explode at the India-Australia match, threatening thousands of innocent lives in the stadium. Enter DIG Vikram Singh, the sharp cop who uncovers the conspiracy and dismantles it just in time, becoming an absolute hero in the process.

Through the chaos and danger, Sunny steps up when it matters most—he plays an absolutely stunning match-winning stroke for India that secures victory and transforms him into a genuine national hero. The experience humbles Ronny and forces him to see that talent and character matter more than ego or revenge, ultimately bridging the gap between the two cricketers. It's that perfect Bollywood blend of sports heroics, patriotism, and redemption that just hits different!
