Kishore Kumar

Kishore Kumar

Born: 4 August 1929

Kishore Kumar was a force of nature in Bollywood, born Abhas Kumar Ganguly in 1929 and becoming one of the most influential playback singers in Indian cinema history. His career was nothing short of legendary—the guy could do it all: sing, act, compose, direct, and produce. What really set him apart was his incredible vocal range and signature yodelling, which became his trademark. He racked up 8 Filmfare Awards for Best Male Playback Singer from a whopping 28 nominations, a record that still stands. Beyond Hindi, Kishore was a polyglot musician who effortlessly switched between Bengali, Marathi, Assamese, Gujarati, Kannada, and several other Indian languages, proving his genius transcended regional boundaries. Kishore's style was wildly versatile—he bounced between pop, rock and roll, semi-classical, comedy music, and even Rabindra Sangeet with equal ease and authenticity. His contribution to Bollywood wasn't just about hitting the right notes; he fundamentally changed how playback singing could be approached, bringing personality and experimentation to every track. Even after his death in 1987, his non-film albums, particularly his Bengali recordings, remain all-time classics that music lovers still cherish. His brother Ashok Kumar summed it up perfectly: Kishore's voice had a unique quality that "hits the mike, straight, at its most sensitive point"—a gift that made him immortal in Indian cinema.
