Review
Divya Khosla Kumar's "Yaariyan" rides on a remarkably simple premise—college kids competing to save their campus—yet executes it with enough infectious energy to justify its impressive ₹55-crore box office haul and 450% ROI. The film operates within the well-trodden territory of youth-centric narratives, but what saves it from mediocrity is its refusal to overcomplicate matters. The ensemble cast, led by a charming Pulkit Samrat, shares genuine chemistry that translates into believable camaraderie, while the supporting performances ground the narrative without descending into caricature. The direction prioritizes narrative momentum over thematic depth, which works in the film's favor for its target demographic, though it leaves little room for character complexity or meaningful emotional arcs. The Australian sequences feel more like an extended holiday montage than substantive storytelling, yet the film's pace ensures viewers rarely have time to dwell on these shortcomings.
Where "Yaariyan" genuinely falters is in its refusal to engage with the stakes it establishes. A casino replacing an educational institution should carry weight, but the film treats this premise as merely a MacGuffin to justify exotic locations rather than exploring any real thematic tension. The romantic subplots, particularly Lakshya's reunion arc, feel halfbaked and stretch the narrative unnecessarily. Kumar's direction, while competent, lacks the finesse to elevate predictable screenplay moments into
Storyline
So basically, this movie follows this guy Lakshya and his crew of friends who are just having the time of their lives at college in Gangtok. There's Jiya who's super popular, Saloni who's the brainy one, Pardy who's into music, and Neil who's all about bikes. They're just vibing together, getting into relationships, and basically doing what college kids do – living without much of a plan and just enjoying the moment.
Things take a wild turn when this Australian businessman decides to buy their college campus and turn it into a casino instead. But here's the thing – he'll let the college stay if the students can beat his Australian team in some competition. So the principal picks five students, including Lakshya, and they end up going to Australia to compete. While they're there, Lakshya reunites with his cousin and meets this Australian girl named Jannet who's really into him.
The whole vibe of the movie is about these five friends going through challenges and adventures together, dealing with relationship drama, and basically finding out what matters most to them during this crazy competition. There's romance, friendship, and a lot of chaos mixed in there, all while they're trying to save their college from being demolished.
