5/10Critic Score

"Striker" arrives with a premise that should resonate—a hustler's revenge narrative wrapped around carrom, India's most intimate competitive sport. Yet director Amit Sharma struggles to translate this inherent tension into compelling cinema. The film's central conflict between Surya and Jaleel feels underdeveloped, relying on convenient plot mechanics rather than earned character dynamics. Surya's transformation from desperate migrant to confident carrom shark happens too abruptly, and we're never given sufficient reason to believe in his psychological shift beyond a few montage sequences. The supporting cast, particularly Zaid, remains frustratingly underdeveloped, existing primarily as functional plot devices rather than characters with their own agency.

Where "Striker" falters most is in its tonal inconsistency. The film oscillates between gritty social commentary and conventional masala revenge drama without committing fully to either. The performances feel competent but uninspired—there's no scene-stealing moment that elevates the material or makes us forget we're watching a narrative we've encountered dozens of times before. The direction lacks the visual flair or narrative boldness that could distinguish a carrom-based thriller in an oversaturated market. At ₹1.23 crore with an 89% ROI loss, audiences clearly sensed the lack of originality, and their verdict appears justified.

What ultimately disappoints is the squandered potential. A story about systemic exploitatio

Storyline

So this guy Surya comes from nothing, basically grew up poor and sickly, which meant he missed a lot of school. His older brother got him into carrom, and he was actually pretty talented at it—won the junior championship when he was just a kid! But as he got older, he kind of forgot about the game and started dreaming bigger, you know? He was saving up to move to Dubai for a job, thinking that was his ticket out. Unfortunately, some sketchy employment agency totally scammed him and took all his money, leaving him completely broke.

That's when Surya ends up meeting this guy named Jaleel, who's basically been running the whole neighborhood since the seventies. The guy's got his fingers in basically every shady deal you can imagine and preys on people who are struggling. Jaleel's basically the untouchable kingpin of the area, and he's the same person who swindled Surya out of his savings. Talk about bad timing, right?

Now, Surya reconnects with his old friend Zaid, who gets him back into carrom, except this time it's a whole different world—the hustling scene where people play for serious money. Seeing as how Jaleel's the one who destroyed his dreams, Surya decides he's going to take him on in his own game. Surya's got patience and nerves of steel, which are his biggest weapons, but things get really complicated as he challenges this powerful guy on his home turf.
