Mittal v/s Mittal

Review

6/10Critic Score

This is a film that grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go—not because of cinematic brilliance, but because it dares to look unflinchingly at the machinery of domestic abuse within India's privileged households. The story of Mitali's transformation from a hopeful bride to a woman reclaiming her agency is genuinely moving, and it finds power in its refusal to romanticize her suffering. The performances carry the weight of this narrative; there's a rawness here that suggests the actors understood they were telling a story that matters to countless women sitting in dark theaters. Yet, for all its emotional intensity, the film struggles with pacing and subtlety—scenes that should simmer instead boil over, and the nuance gets lost in melodrama more often than it should. The direction feels caught between wanting to be a courtroom thriller and wanting to be a deeply personal character study, and it doesn't quite succeed at either.

What ultimately frustrates me is the squandered potential. The mother-in-law could have been a complex antagonist instead of a caricature; Karan's transformation from charming suitor to abuser deserved more psychological depth rather than sudden switches. The legal battle promised in the synopsis feels hurried and underdeveloped, turning what could have been a powerful examination of India's justice system into mere backdrop. Still, there's something valuable in seeing this story told at all, in watching a woman's fight f

Storyline

So there's this gorgeous model named Mitali who catches the eye of Karan, this super wealthy guy from one of India's richest families. Even though they're basically from two completely different worlds—she's got humble middle-class roots while he's used to getting everything handed to him on a silver platter—Karan is totally head over heels for her. He's so determined to have her that he just shows up at her family's doorstep with a marriage proposal, and her thrilled parents jump at the opportunity. They tie the knot pretty quickly.

Things take a dark turn pretty fast after the wedding. Mitali's new mother-in-law absolutely despises her and starts deliberately stirring up drama between the couple. It becomes clear that Karan is basically a momma's boy who does whatever his mother tells him, while his father just sits quietly on the sidelines. What's even worse, Karan has this controlling side that comes out—he wants to crush her spirit and force her to stop being independent. The charming guy she married transforms into something terrifying once they're alone, treating her in ways she never imagined possible.

Pushed to her absolute breaking point by the cruelty and abuse she's enduring, Mitali decides enough is enough. She gathers up her courage, leaves that toxic household, and takes legal action against her husband. She hires a lawyer and opens a case against him, ready to fight the system that's been enabling his behavior. Not surprisingly, Karan doesn't take this lying down—he brings in top legal firepower to protect himself, setting the stage for an intense courtroom showdown.
