Review

5.1/10Critic Score

Nidaan tackles a genuinely important subject—HIV stigma in contemporary India—but fumbles its execution with melodramatic choices and underdeveloped character work. Director Vinay Sapru attempts to blend social commentary with intimate family drama, yet the film oscillates between heavy-handed messaging and soap-opera theatricality without finding genuine emotional grounding. The premise of Soumya's journey from diagnosis to defiance holds promise, but the screenplay rushes through critical moments of self-discovery and psychological processing, instead prioritizing shock value and third-act revelations. What could have been a nuanced exploration of prejudice becomes a series of well-intentioned but simplistic confrontations, where characters either fully accept or categorically reject her—leaving little room for the messy, human complexity that would elevate this narrative.

The performances feel constrained by the material's tonal inconsistency. The lead actress demonstrates moments of conviction, particularly when Soumya asserts her autonomy, yet lacks sufficient scenes to build the deeper psychological portrait the role demands. Supporting cast members, especially in the family dynamics, veer toward caricature rather than believable resistance rooted in genuine fear or ignorance. The cinematography competently captures Mumbai's urban landscape, but there's no visual language that distinguishes Nidaan from dozens of other health-crisis dramas produced in the last decade. S

Storyline

So there's this girl named Soumya living it up in Mumbai with her wealthy parents, studying science and crushing on Sanjay Dutt like any normal college student would. She's actually pretty brave too – despite being terrified of needles her whole life, she manages to donate blood for her boyfriend Ninad during a blood drive. But then life takes a really unexpected turn when she gets super sick during her final exams and doctors think it might be malaria.

What starts as a fever that just won't go away becomes something way more serious when her dad finds out the real diagnosis. Her parents are absolutely shaken when they learn she's HIV positive, and her mom decides they need to keep this under wraps. When Soumya finally discovers the truth about her condition, she decides she's not going to let it stop her from living her life the way she wants to.

Things get pretty complicated when Soumya decides she wants to marry Ninad despite everything that's happened. The revelation ends up creating some major drama with his family, and suddenly doors that were open to her start closing – including getting rejected from the hospital she wanted to attend. Her friends start pulling away too, and she has to figure out how to navigate all this judgment and rejection while dealing with her own situation.
