Review
Muskaan attempts to straddle the line between rom-com frivolity and murder mystery thriller, but stumbles awkwardly in the space between the two. The opening act, where Sameer's obsessive search for his "dream girl" collides with the pragmatic Muskaan through a series of phone mix-ups, borrows heavily from the meet-cute playbook perfected by films like *Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na*—yet lacks the charm and wit that made those connections feel organic. The chemistry between the leads shows promise, but the tonal whiplash when Jahnvi's murder derails the narrative feels jarring rather than dramatic. Director's handling of the transition suggests an uncertainty about what story he actually wants to tell, and this indecision ripples through the film's second half, where the murder investigation takes precedence over character development in ways that feel convenient rather than earned.
Where Muskaan truly falters is in the execution of its mystery mechanics. The "S" clue feels like a crude narrative device rather than genuine detective work, and Inspector Rajput remains a one-dimensional antagonist rather than a credible investigator. The revelation that Satin is the killer lands with a thud—we've had so little meaningful interaction with this character that his villainy reads as an afterthought, a plot requirement rather than a character arc. Compare this to how Vishal Bhardwaj or even Sriram Raghavan construct their thrillers, where the mystery unfolds with meticulous precision. He
Storyline
Sameer's got it all—the designer suits, the penthouse, the adoring girlfriend Jahnvi—but he's obsessed with finding some mythical dream girl who exists only in his head! When a series of hilariously botched phone calls keeps connecting him to this spunky girl named Muskaan, fate basically shoves them together on a bus ride, and sparks start flying. He hires her as his model, and suddenly his perfectly ordered life gets a whole lot messier and infinitely more interesting.
Then everything goes dark when Jahnvi gets brutally murdered, and the only lead is that the killer's name starts with "S"—which obviously makes Sameer public enemy number one in Inspector Rajput's eyes! As the noose tightens and suspicion closes in from all sides, something unexpected happens: Sameer and Muskaan genuinely fall for each other while hunting for the real killer. The tension is absolutely suffocating as they race against time, knowing that the wrong move could destroy everything.
The twist lands perfectly when Muskaan uncovers a cassette where Jahnvi reveals the shocking truth—it's Satin, Sameer's supposedly loyal best friend, who's been the killer all along! Justice gets served, the real culprit gets arrested, and our couple finally gets their moment in the sun, proving that sometimes you have to survive absolute chaos to find the person who was meant for you all along.
