M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story

Neeraj Pandey's "M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story" is a surprisingly effective sports biography that balances commercial appeal with genuine narrative substance. Sushant Singh Rajput delivers a career-defining performance, capturing Dhoni's quiet intensity and the vulnerability beneath his composed exterior—particularly in scenes that don't rely on cricket itself. Pandey's direction is methodical rather than flashy; he resists the temptation to overdramatize, instead letting small moments of character development accumulate weight. The first half, tracing Dhoni's journey from railway employee to national player, is genuinely engaging, with solid support from Anupam Kher as his father. However, the film stumbles when it attempts to weave in the fictional romantic subplot with Priyanka (Disha Patani), which feels tacked on and dilutes the narrative focus—a calculated commercial compromise that softens the film's thematic edges.

Where the film truly falters is in its treatment of the "untold story" premise. The personal tragedy that supposedly defines Dhoni's character arc is handled with such restraint that it becomes almost invisible, undermining the emotional stakes the film tries to establish in its final act. Pandey's technical competence—sharp editing, authentic cricket sequences, convincing period detail—cannot fully compensate for the tonal inconsistency between intimate character study and inspirational sports drama. Storyline

So basically, this film follows Mahi's journey from being a young kid in Ranchi who gets into cricket kind of by accident. His coach spots him and convinces him to switch from playing football to cricket, and even though he starts as just a wicket-keeper, he works incredibly hard to become a solid all-rounder. Things get tough though—he struggles to make it big initially, ends up working as a railway ticket collector, and has to balance his day job with his cricket dreams. But he's so determined that he eventually pushes through and gets selected for the national team.

Once Mahi makes it to the big leagues, his life takes an interesting turn when he meets this amazing woman named Priyanka on a flight. She's bubbly and full of life, and they really click. The two fall in love, and it seems like everything's finally coming together for him—he's even scoring centuries on the field. But then something really tragic happens that shakes him to his core and makes him question everything, including his cricket career.

Despite the heartbreak and struggles he faces, Mahi eventually finds his way forward and takes on a leadership role in the team. The movie shows how he rises above his personal challenges and becomes this inspirational figure. It's really a story about perseverance, dealing with loss, and discovering your true purpose in life, all set against the backdrop of Indian cricket.
