4/10Critic Score

"Love Shagun" is a film that mistakes loud chaos for comedy and emotional confusion for character depth. The premise—a man seeking a divorce-ready bride to appease his mother—has potential for satirical bite, but director squanders it by playing everything painfully straight. Abhay Deol trudges through the role of JD with the enthusiasm of someone stuck in traffic, while the three friends function as comedic props rather than actual characters with agency. The film confuses constant scheming with narrative momentum, and what emerges is a tedious parade of contrived situations where no one behaves like an actual human being. The chemistry between JD and Tia never materializes because the script never bothers to develop genuine conflict or attraction—just surface-level eye-candy shots masquerading as romance.

What's truly grating is how the film treats its central conceit. A man plotting to marry and divorce someone isn't morally interesting here; it's treated as a lark, a bit of harmless fun. The independent woman (Tia) exists primarily to be "won over" rather than to have her own arc. The astrological subplot feels like window dressing, never woven meaningfully into the fabric of the story. There's also a strange misogyny lurking beneath the surface—JD's mother is portrayed as an unthinking force of nature rather than a person with legitimate concerns. Even the climax, which attempts some emotional sincerity, arrives too late and without enough foundation to matter.

Storyline

So basically, this guy JD is at that point in his life where everyone's breathing down his neck about getting married, right? But here's the twist—his mom won't stop pestering him about it, and on top of that, there's all this astrological stuff creating additional drama. He's pretty much stuck between a rock and a hard place, dealing with pressure from all sides.

JD's got three buddies who jump in to help him figure things out, and each of them has their own wild take on what love actually means. These friends decide to come up with this ridiculous scheme where they'll help him find a girl specifically so he can marry her and then divorce her later—basically trying to get his mom off his back by playing along with her wishes. JD goes along with all their crazy ideas and schemes, hoping something will work out.

Then he meets Tia, this super independent and free-spirited woman who doesn't follow anyone else's rules. You'd think this would make things easier, but surprise—everything gets way messier than anyone expected! Now JD's caught between listening to his mom's demands and following what his heart actually wants, and it's turning into a much bigger mess than he ever bargained for.
