Kismat squanders a genuinely clever premise—a MacGuffin literally embedded in a guitar—by drowning it in the bloated conventions of 1980s spy-thriller kitsch. Director Vijay Anand's hand feels heavy-footed here, transforming what could've been a taut, witty caper into a meandering affair that mistakes length for substance. The opening act crackles with promise: Rajesh Khanna's Vicky is likably bumbling, and the inciting incident has genuine comic potential. But once Roma (Neetu Singh) enters on that train, the film pivots into a tedious romance subplot that actively works against the mounting tension. Anand's earlier work showed restraint; here, he indulges every impulse—every musical number, every comedic detour with Jani Bhai (Asrani) feels self-congratulatory rather than purposeful. The film doesn't trust its central thriller to hold attention, so it keeps interrupting itself.

What remains frustrating is how talented the cast is in spite of themselves. Khanna carries the film with effortless charm, even when the writing abandons coherence; Neetu Singh has genuine chemistry with him, and their scenes together hint at the film *Kismat* could've been—a romantic-thriller with pace and stakes. But the Scorpion reveal lands with a thud, and Nancy's deathbed exposition feels like narrative desperation. Pran's menace as the villain is undercut by a script that forgets to make his motivations matter. The technical craft is polished—the cinematography captures Mumbai with period gl

Storyline

Bomb blasts tear across the nation and nobody knows who's behind them—until Mr. Gonz, owner of a quirky music shop, calls the Commissioner with a smoking gun: he's got the names and faces of the masterminds stashed in a microdot. But when Scorpion's goons storm in to silence him, Gonz slips the tiny evidence into Vicky's guitar just as our unsuspecting hero walks in to pick up his instrument. Now Vicky's got a target on his back and no idea why everyone's trying to kill him.

On the run with a guitar full of secrets, Vicky can't convince the cops that anyone's even after him—but the goons keep proving it! He meets Roma on a train, a runaway heiress escaping her father's tyranny, and they fall hard for each other while evading attacks. With help from Jani Bhai, a genius inventor, Vicky lands a gig at a hotel where Roma's also staying, and suddenly life feels almost normal—until Nancy, a hotel employee and Scorpion's plant, creates drama and tries to murder him. Before dying, she reveals Scorpion's been blackmailing her with her parents' lives the whole time.

Now it's all about uncovering who Scorpion really is, and whether this beautiful, chaotic love story between Vicky and Roma can survive the conspiracy closing in around them.
