Review
Rajesh Khanna's *Ilzaam* attempts to marry romantic melodrama with crime-thriller elements, a combination that has worked brilliantly in films like *Deewar* and *Khoon Ka Khoon*, but here the execution falters under the weight of its own contradictions. The central conceit—Ajay's dual identity as both charming lover and ruthless criminal—could have been explored with the psychological complexity of a Yash Chopra or even the stylistic flair of a Ravi Tandon, but instead we're offered a surface-level romance that demands we believe in Aarti's instant, soul-deep connection to a street orphan, only to later condemn her for not recognizing his criminal nature. Govinda brings his typical charm to the dual role, and there are moments where his internal conflict registers, but the screenplay doesn't give him—or us—much to work with beyond the obvious.
What truly disappoints is how the film squanders its thematic potential. The premise could have functioned as a genuine exploration of whether love can transcend moral corruption, something *Chandni Bar* or even *Rang* attempted with varying degrees of success. Instead, *Ilzaam* treats Aarti's dilemma as mere plot convenience, pivoting between romantic angst and crime-heist sequences without earning either emotionally. The songs interrupt rather than illuminate character, and the "stunning collision of heart versus consequence" promised in the synopsis never materializes with any real dramatic weight. The film's refusal to commit to it
Storyline
Ajay's a charming street orphan who sweeps Aarti right off her feet—their love is instant and electric! But Aarti's ruthless dad Dhanraj puts the brakes on hard, demanding Ajay become filthy rich before he even thinks about marrying his daughter. Crushed and desperate, Ajay vanishes from Aarti's world, leaving her absolutely shattered and unable to move on.
Months later, Aarti spots someone who could be Ajay's twin—except this guy insists his name's Vijay and he's living the straight life with his mother, sister, and cop brother Inspector Suraj Prasad! Just when things seem promising, Suraj's investigation uncovers the brutal truth: Ajay's been running an elaborate criminal racket, singing and dancing to distract victims while his gang raids their homes and cleans them out. The whole operation's been exposed, and Aarti's world crumbles again.
Now Aarti faces an impossible choice between the man she loves and the reality of who he's become—a career criminal wrapped up in major heists! Ajay's caught between his loyalty to his criminal empire and his genuine love for Aarti, realizing he's trapped himself in a life that's cost him everything that matters. It's a stunning collision of heart versus consequence that forces both of them to confront whether love can actually survive such a massive betrayal of trust.
