Raj Mehta's "Hum Do Hamare Do" attempts to navigate the treacherous terrain between romantic comedy and emotional drama, ultimately stumbling in the execution. The premise itself carries genuine promise—a man constructing a false family identity to impress a woman who shares his orphaned past could have yielded either biting social satire or meaningful introspection about belonging. Instead, the film meanders through its central conflict, treating Dhruv's deception as a convenient plot device rather than exploring the psychological weight of his choices. The supporting cast, particularly the retirement home subplot involving Purushottam's rediscovered romance, feels mechanically inserted to inject sentimentality rather than organically integrated into the narrative. While the film acknowledges the irony of two orphans seeking different validation routes, it rarely capitalizes on this thematic richness, preferring surface-level hijinks over substantive character development.

Where the film finds occasional footing is in its lighter moments—the montage of failed fake parents provides some genuine laughs, and the chemistry between leads suggests what a tighter, more focused comedy might have achieved. Storyline

Dhruv, a self-made entrepreneur who grew up as an orphan, falls for Aanya, a woman whose parents died in a tragic accident during her childhood. When she expresses her desire for a partner with a loving family and a pet dog, Dhruv realizes he needs to present himself differently to win her heart. His unconventional background suddenly becomes an obstacle in their budding romance.

Desperate to transform his image, Dhruv enlists his best friend and a questionable marriage broker to scout for fake parents who can help him appear more conventionally desirable. After several failed attempts at manufacturing the perfect family setup, Dhruv remembers Purushottam, an old man who once employed him at his dhaba years ago and now resides in a retirement facility.

Dhruv and his friend track down Purushottam, hoping to convince him to pose as his father. When initial persuasion fails, they uncover a buried romantic connection from Purushottam's past—a woman named Deepti who walked out of his life decades ago. The revelation of this long-lost love sparks new possibilities for Dhruv's carefully constructed plan.
