6/10Critic Score

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Guzaarish" is an ambitious, emotionally laden meditation on mortality and meaning that swings wildly between profound introspection and melodramatic excess. Hrithik Roshan delivers a career-best performance—nuanced and deeply felt—as a paralyzed radio host grappling with the choice between existence and dignified exit, while Aishwarya Rai Bachchan provides steady, understated support as his devoted nurse. The film's central premise—blending disability narrative with euthanasia ethics—is genuinely rare in Hindi cinema, and Bhansali's trademark visual opulence gives weight to the psychological heaviness. However, the director's maximalist sensibilities often work against the story's intimacy; the film would benefit from restraint, yet instead suffocates under ornate cinematography, overwrought background scores, and the contrived subplot involving Omar and the accident's revelation, which feels tacked on rather than organically woven.

What ultimately undercuts "Guzaarish" is its inability to commit fully to its philosophical core. The film oscillates between asking difficult questions about autonomy and suffering, then retreats into conventional sentiment and magical-thinking plot twists that dilute its impact. At ₹61.3 crores with an 18% negative ROI, the box office rejection speaks to audience discomfort—not with the subject matter's heaviness, but with the tonal inconsistency that never lets viewers settle into genuine emotional catharsis. Storyline

So there's this guy named Ethan who used to be an amazing magician, but a tragic accident left him paralyzed from the neck down fourteen years ago. Despite everything, he's become this incredible radio host with his own show where he lifts people's spirits with his humor and positivity. You'd never guess he's dealing with such a serious physical condition based on how he brings joy to his listeners every single day.

His loyal nurse Sofia has been by his side for over a decade, supporting him through everything. On the anniversary of his accident, Ethan decides to pursue something pretty heavy—he wants to appeal to the courts for assisted dying. His best friend and lawyer Devyani gets behind him, and surprisingly, even his mom Isabel supports his decision, which shocks everyone around them.

Then this young guy named Omar shows up wanting to learn magic from Ethan because he considers him a legend in the field. Ethan sees the passion in Omar and agrees to teach him and pass down his skills. Things get complicated when Omar reveals who his father is—someone connected to the accident that changed Ethan's life forever. But that revelation doesn't stop Ethan from wanting to help Omar learn magic and become part of his life.
