Footpath attempts ambitious moral territory—exploring whether redemption is possible for those born into violence—but stumbles in its execution despite a compelling premise. Rishab Sawant's direction oscillates between stylish crime drama and melodramatic excess, never quite finding the tonal balance needed to make Arjun's internal conflict genuinely wrenching. The reveal that he's an undercover cop feels narratively rushed, arriving without sufficient groundwork to justify the emotional betrayal that should devastate both the characters and audience. The performances, particularly in the emotional crescendos, lean toward theatrical rather than authentic, undermining the film's pretensions toward psychological depth.

Where Footpath finds its footing is in the smaller character moments—Arjun's quiet desperation in Ghaziabad, the quiet tenderness of Raghu's reformation arc—and in its willingness to interrogate the cost of loyalty in criminal ecosystems. The cinematography effectively captures both the claustrophobia of organized crime and the false promise of urban escape. However, these islands of quality cannot compensate for a narrative structure that prioritizes shock value over earned drama, and a second half that devolves into conventional gangland shootouts rather than exploring the philosophical questions the opening promises. Given Sawant's previous work hovers around 5.4/10, this represents modest improvement, yet still struggles to transcend its genre limitations or

Storyline

Arjun Singh's world explodes when his union leader father is brutally murdered—and his gangster neighbors, the Srivastav brothers Raghu and Shekhar, convince him vengeance is the only way forward. They hunt down the killers and strike them down in cold blood, but when Arjun becomes the prime suspect, the brothers help him escape to Ghaziabad where he reinvents himself as Mohan Kumar Sharma, a straight-laced real estate agent. Years of quiet living follow, but the pull of home proves too strong.

Back in Pune, Arjun finds himself welcomed back like a prodigal son by Raghu and Shekhar, who've now built a criminal empire of their own—and he reignites his romance with their sister Sanjana, who desperately wants her brothers to abandon their gangster ways. Arjun throws his weight behind reforming Raghu, especially since Raghu's fallen for a schoolteacher who refuses to be with him unless he goes legit. Just when Raghu's about to turn over a new leaf, Shekhar drops a bomb: Arjun isn't a reformed hood at all, but an undercover cop playing the long game to destroy them both.

Everything spirals into chaos as the brothers feel utterly betrayed by the man they saved and trusted with their lives. The idealistic dream of redemption shatters, and what unfolds is a raw, brutal confrontation between loyalty, law, and the impossible weight of choices made long ago. It's explosive stuff that questions whether anyone in this world can ever truly escape their past or find genuine redemption.
