6.5/10Critic Score

Durgamati ventures into ambitious territory by colliding political thriller conventions with supernatural horror, a fusion that largely succeeds in maintaining narrative momentum. The film's central premise—a detained IAS officer held in an ominous estate while possessed by an ancient spirit—creates productive narrative friction between rational investigation and inexplicable phenomena. The interrogation framework provides structural discipline, allowing the story to oscillate between bureaucratic machinations and paranormal escalation without losing coherence. What emerges is a film willing to complicate its own genre boundaries, refusing easy categorization and instead layering mystery upon mystery as officials struggle to distinguish between psychological manipulation, genuine mental disturbance, and genuine supernatural intervention.

The execution, however, proves uneven in translating these conceptual strengths to screen. While the premise itself generates intrigue and the bungalow functions effectively as an atmospheric pressure cooker, the film occasionally stumbles in sustaining the delicate balance between political intrigue and horror elements. The performances navigate the tonal shifts with reasonable conviction, though the screenplay sometimes prioritizes exposition and plot mechanics over deeper character psychology. The central question of whether we're witnessing possession, deception, or madness remains engaging, but the answers the film provides don't always

Storyline

A scheming politician's enemies hatch a devious plot to bring him down by interrogating his trusted aide, an IAS officer languishing in jail for a crime she may not have committed. To keep their dirty work under wraps, these corrupt officials stash her in Durgamati Bungalow, a crumbling ruin on the city's outskirts that locals whisper about in fear. What they don't anticipate is that their prisoner's answers become increasingly cryptic, hinting at truths far deeper than their shallow investigation can fathom.

Things take a thrilling supernatural turn when the restless spirit of an ancient queen begins possessing the detained woman, forcing authorities to grapple with phenomena that defy rational explanation. The officials scramble to understand what's happening—is she genuinely disturbed, cunningly manipulating them, or something far stranger? Their attempts to categorize and control the situation only deepen the mystery, as paranormal indicators begin piling up around the cursed estate.

What makes this film absolutely captivating is how it weaves political conspiracy with ghostly intrigue, keeping viewers perpetually off-balance. The bungalow itself becomes a character, harboring secrets that challenge everything the authorities think they know about justice, guilt, and redemption. It's a masterclass in building tension while exploring whether salvation can come from the most unexpected and terrifying of sources.
