Arjun Rampal's "Daddy" attempts to chronicle the rise of a complex underworld figure against the backdrop of Mumbai's economic decline, and while the ambition is commendable, the execution falters under the weight of its own sprawl. The film's first half shows promise—the period setting of the 1960s-70s textile mill closures provides genuine historical grounding, and there are moments where the socio-economic desperation that drives men toward crime feels palpable. Rampal himself brings a certain intensity to Arun Gawli, capturing the transformation from desperate youth to hardened criminal with occasional flashes of conviction. However, the narrative becomes increasingly muddled as it progresses, struggling to balance the romance with Zubeida, the mentor-betrayal arc with Maqsood Bhai, and the eventual political ascension into a coherent whole.

What ultimately undermines "Daddy" is director Ashim Ahluwalia's inability to tighten the storytelling and create meaningful emotional stakes. The supporting performances, particularly from Farhan Akhtar and Tabu, feel underutilized despite their efforts, while the film's attempt to explore Gawli's internal conflict between ambition and morality never quite crystallizes into something profound. The police investigation subplot, with Rajat Kapoor's cop character, adds another narrative thread without adding significant thematic depth. While the film deserves credit for tackling a lesser-known true story with visual flair and refusing

Storyline

So basically, this movie takes you back to Mumbai in the 60s and 70s when all the textile mills were shutting down left and right, leaving tons of young guys without jobs. Our main guy Arun Gawli gets pulled into the world of illegal gambling and gang life by his buddies, thinking it's a quick way to make some cash. Things spiral pretty fast when he gets involved in something serious and ends up being mentored by this powerful crime boss named Maqsood Bhai, which is honestly the worst thing that could happen to him.

As Gawli climbs higher in the criminal world, his ideals start clashing with Maqsood's, and they become enemies instead of allies. In the middle of all this chaos, he meets and marries Zubeida, a woman who genuinely loves him and tries her best to convince him to abandon his dangerous lifestyle and go straight. For a moment, it actually looks like he might just do that and turn his life around.

But then tragedy strikes when his close friend Rama is killed in a police shootout, and Gawli believes Maqsood is behind it. This sets off a brutal gang war between the two of them, with a determined cop named Vijaykar Nitin hunting him down the whole time. The story follows how this feared underworld figure eventually makes his way into politics and earns himself the nickname "Daddy."
