Nishikant Kamat
Nishikant Kamat was a filmmaker who wore many hats and did it brilliantly across multiple Indian cinema industries. Starting with his Marathi film debut Dombivali Fast, which became a massive hit, he quickly proved he had the magic touch—so much so that he remade it in Tamil as Evano Oruvan with R. Madhavan, earning stellar reviews both times. His Hindi directorial ventures were equally impressive: Mumbai Meri Jaan tackled the 2006 bombings with gritty realism, Force introduced the world to action star Vidyut Jamwal alongside John Abraham, and Drishyam became one of Bollywood's most celebrated thrillers, showcasing his knack for adapting regional films into pan-Indian blockbusters. What made Kamat stand out was his ability to tell gripping stories with precision and intensity—whether he was behind the camera or in front of it. He didn't shy away from taking on complex negative roles, famously playing the antagonist in his own film Rocky Handsome alongside John Abraham. His contribution to Bollywood lay in elevating the thriller genre and proving that remakes could be just as powerful as originals when helmed by a visionary director. Though his career spanned just over 15 years until his passing in 2020, Kamat left an indelible mark on Hindi and regional cinema, creating films that audiences still revisit and discuss with passion.
