4.8/10Critic Score

"Chal Chalein" attempts to tackle a genuinely urgent social issue—academic pressure and student mental health—but stumbles in its execution, diluting a sensitive narrative into melodramatic activism. Mithun Chakraborty brings his trademark gravitas to the role of Sanjay, the crusading lawyer, yet the character feels underwritten, functioning more as a plot device than a fully realized protagonist. The film's central tragedy, which should anchor the emotional core, is treated with the subtlety of a sledgehammer; instead of allowing the audience to sit with the grief and systemic complexity, the narrative rushes toward courtroom theatrics and mass movement sequences that feel unearned. The supporting performances, particularly from the student ensemble, lack the nuance needed to make their motivations resonate beyond surface-level outrage.

Director's ambitions outpace the screenplay's ability to deliver coherent social commentary. The film oscillates between intimate character moments and grand, sweeping statements about systemic reform, never finding a sustainable rhythm between the two. What could have been a poignant exploration of institutional accountability becomes a preachy, oversimplified narrative where villains are cartoonish and solutions feel miraculous rather than complex. The ₹0.55 crore box office return (with a -72% ROI) suggests audiences sensed this disconnect—they were unwilling to invest in a film that wears its message like a banner rather than weaving it

Storyline

So there's this really tragic situation where a young student takes his own life because he's been crushed under the weight of academic expectations from his parents. It's honestly heartbreaking stuff that explores how much pressure kids face these days to constantly achieve and perform.

The student's close friends are absolutely devastated and decide they need to do something meaningful about it. They bring in this passionate lawyer named Sanjay, played by Mithun Chakraborty, who becomes their voice in fighting against the system—the parents, educational institutions, and government policies that put unrealistic demands on young people.

What starts as a small effort to seek justice turns into this massive movement that captures the nation's attention. The case becomes a huge talking point, with people everywhere discussing the real issues with how we treat our kids and the education system. It becomes way bigger than just one family's tragedy.
