Bhaag Johnny

Kunal Kemmu throws himself into this bizarre premise with genuine earnestness, but "Bhaag Johnny" asks us to swallow a premise so fantastical—a magical genie offering dual consciousness—that the film never quite anchors itself in emotional reality. The first half has promise; there's a real moral tension in Johnny's dilemma between survival and conscience, and Kriti Kharbanda brings warmth to Tanya, making us understand why he'd choose her over blind obedience. But director Rajesh Mapuskar struggles to balance the thriller's darker undercurrents with the whimsical magical element. The tonal inconsistency becomes increasingly jarring—one moment we're in a taut crime drama, the next we're watching a genie orchestrate impossible scenarios. It feels less like a coherent vision and more like two different films awkwardly spliced together.

What disappoints most is how the film squanders its central question: what does it cost us to live a double life? Instead of exploring Johnny's fractured psyche or the psychological toll of existing in two realities, the script devolves into convoluted plot mechanics and contrived coincidences. The supporting cast feels underutilized, and the climax, when it arrives, neither satisfies the thriller elements nor the magical ones. You're left with a film that's neither thrilling enough to grip you nor fantastical enough to enchant you—it exists in an uncomfortable middle ground where neither element strengthens the other.
