Nitesh Tiwari's "Bawaal" attempts something genuinely ambitious—a character-driven drama that weaponizes historical geography as a lens for marital and personal reckoning. The premise is compelling: a narcissistic educator whose carefully curated social image crumbles, forcing both him and his long-suffering wife onto a transformative European sojourn. Ayushmann Khurrana delivers a remarkably restrained performance, avoiding the theatrical excess one might expect from a man playing wounded ego; instead, he portrays the slow erosion of pretense with genuine nuance. Jitendra Kumar's supporting work provides grounding, though it's Khurrana's gradual unraveling—from defensive posturing to authentic vulnerability—that anchors the film's emotional arc.

Storyline

A self-absorbed history teacher in Lucknow has built his entire existence on pretense and image management, keeping his accomplished wife confined at home to shield his reputation from her medical condition. When a classroom incident with a powerful politician's son threatens to expose his façade, he faces sudden upheaval in his carefully constructed world.

Desperate to escape the consequences, the protagonist persuades his wife to join him on a European expedition tracing historical sites from World War II. What begins as a calculated escape attempt transforms into an unexpected journey of discovery for both partners.

As they traverse significant locations across the continent, their perspectives on life, relationships, and history itself undergo a profound shift. The journey becomes less about fleeing trouble and more about confronting uncomfortable truths about themselves and each other.
