4/10Critic Score

Barkhaa arrives as a well-intentioned melodrama that fumbles its own emotional weight under the burden of lazy storytelling and performative sympathy. Director Anurag Kashyap attempts to tackle the exploitation of vulnerable women—genuinely worthy territory—but the film reduces Barkhaa's trauma to a backdrop for Jatin's redemption arc, making his obsession feel uncomfortably like the very predatory behavior the narrative claims to critique. The performances are serviceable; there's raw sincerity in the supporting cast's delivery, but the leads struggle against a script that treats complexity as an afterthought. What could have been a searching examination of patriarchy and victimhood instead becomes a conventional romance wrapped in the aesthetics of a "serious" film, complete with flashbacks that spell out tragedy rather than let it breathe.

The real problem isn't ambition—it's execution. The central twist, designed to reshape everything we've seen, instead feels grafted on, as though Kashyap didn't trust his own exploration of these characters to sustain the narrative. The cinematography occasionally captures something tender about the hill station setting, but it's deployed to romanticize rather than interrogate. A film this concerned with a woman's suffering should be uncomfortable, probing, unsparing. Instead, Barkhaa opts for the safer path: victimhood as pathos, redemption through a man's love, and a ending that wraps moral complexity into a neat bow. The box office r

Storyline

So this movie is about this law student named Jatin who goes to a hill station for a vacation with his family, and while he's exploring, he spots this absolutely gorgeous woman called Barkhaa and becomes completely obsessed with her. She's not interested in him at first and keeps pushing him away, but he finds out she works as a dancer at some sketchy nightclub, and instead of backing off, he gets even more determined to figure out who she really is and what her story is.

Through flashbacks, we learn that Barkhaa had a really rough past. She grew up as a sweet, innocent girl in a village with her strict military father, and then she fell for this charming rich guy named Akash who promised her the world and said he wanted to marry her. She trusted him completely, but when she got pregnant, he just vanished without a trace. Her father found out and completely disowned her, leaving her with nothing and nobody, which eventually forced her into that dangerous nightclub lifestyle where she's been taken advantage of ever since.

When Jatin discovers Barkhaa's heartbreaking backstory, he's genuinely moved and tries to convince her that she deserves to be loved and treated right, even though she's terrified to believe in anyone again after being hurt so badly. Just when things seem like they might be heading somewhere, a massive plot twist happens that completely changes everything and brings Jatin's own family into this whole mess in ways nobody could have predicted.
