4.8/10Critic Score

Bal Ganesh approaches its mythological source material with earnest intentions but stumbles significantly in execution, resulting in a film that feels more like a Sunday morning cartoon stretched to feature length than a compelling cinematic experience. Director Upamanyu Chatterjee's handling of the Ganesh origin story lacks the narrative sophistication needed to engage both children and adults—the plot moves with the sluggishness of a mythology lesson rather than the propulsive energy of a proper adventure. The voice performances are serviceable at best, with none of the charisma or emotional depth that could have elevated the central relationship between Parvati and young Ganesh. The animation quality itself is surprisingly flat and uninspired for a film dealing with divine cosmology; the visual palette offers little that sparks wonder or imagination, making even the potential spectacle of the Shiva-Ganesh confrontation feel dramatically inert.

What's most troubling is the film's inability to balance reverence for source material with genuine storytelling innovation. The mythological beats are hit with the precision of a checklist rather than woven into a narrative arc that builds emotional stakes. The comedic timing falls flat in crucial moments, and the dramatic crescendo—when conflict erupts between father and son—registers as melodramatic rather than genuinely compelling. There's an argument to be made for children's cinema as a distinct discipline requiring its own cr

Storyline

So basically, Parvati, this goddess living up on Mount Kailash, gets really fed up when her husband Shiva just walks into their home while she's bathing without permission. She decides she needs her own loyal companion who'll actually listen to her, so she creates this adorable little boy made from sandalwood paste and brings him to life through pure love and devotion. This kid becomes Ganesh, and he's super cute and mischievous, always getting into fun trouble with the other divine beings around.

One day Parvati asks her new son to do the ultimate test of loyalty—guard the palace entrance while she bathes and don't let anyone through, no matter what. Ganesh takes this seriously and actually refuses to let his own father Shiva inside! Even the great god Brahma can't convince him to break his promise to his mom. Shiva absolutely loses it and gets into this wild, furious cosmic dance of destruction, completely enraged that his own kid is blocking him.

Things get pretty intense when the situation spirals out of control and it becomes this whole thing where other gods like Vishnu and Lakshmi have to get involved trying to fix everything. Without giving away what actually happens, let's just say there's this dramatic moment that changes everything for Ganesh, and it sets the stage for how he becomes such a significant figure in the divine world.
