4/10Critic Score

Apna Asmaan attempts to tackle a genuinely compelling premise—the desperation of a parent willing to compromise ethics for their child's advancement—but stumbles in execution at nearly every turn. The film's central conflict between Ravi's paternal desperation and the catastrophic unintended consequences of Dr. Sathya's "brain booster" drug carries thematic weight, yet director fails to mine the psychological complexity this material demands. The performances feel performative rather than lived-in; what should be a searing exploration of parental guilt, marital breakdown, and societal pressure to normalize our children becomes a melodramatic surface-level treatment. The plot mechanics—from Buddhi's sudden intellectual transformation to his descent into criminality—progress with the subtlety of a sledgehammer, never allowing audiences to sit with the moral ambiguity that makes such stories resonant.

The film's most glaring weakness is its inability to balance its multiple thematic strands. The autism representation, the corruption subplot involving Dr. Sathya's criminal connections, and the psychological thriller elements of drug addiction all compete for narrative focus without any achieving coherence. Character motivations feel inconsistent; Padmini's blame toward Ravi lacks proper foundation, and Buddhi's transformation into a "troublemaker" reads as convenient plot device rather than earned character arc. At ₹0.17 crore with a -94% ROI, the box office verdict validates wh

Storyline

So basically, this guy Ravi is struggling big time in his personal life. He works selling plastic products, his marriage is pretty much on the rocks with his wife Padmini, and they've got a son named Buddhi who has autism and learning disabilities. The tension between Ravi and Padmini is really heavy because she blames him for their son's condition, and it's just creating this toxic environment at home.

One day Ravi sees an interview with this scientist Dr. Sathya who's created some kind of wonder drug called a "brain booster" that supposedly fixes mental health issues. Desperate to help his family, Ravi tracks down Sathya and manages to get the medicine. He gives it to Buddhi, and honestly, it works—his son suddenly becomes intellectually sharp and starts thriving at school. The parents are relieved to finally see him functioning like a typical kid and fitting in with other students.

But things get complicated pretty fast. Buddhi starts acting out and becoming this arrogant, troublemaking version of himself, and meanwhile Ravi discovers that Dr. Sathya has some sketchy connections to drug dealers and is wanted by the cops. When Buddhi wins a big math competition and becomes this famous "math genius" celebrity called "Aryabhatta," his behavior spirals into actual criminal activity. It becomes clear that the drug has caused some serious damage to Buddhi's brain, affecting his personality and moral compass in dangerous ways.
