Rajkumar Gupta's *Akira* is a surprisingly layered vigilante thriller that transcends its revenge-revenge-revenge formula through genuine character work and socio-political consciousness. Sonakshi Sinha delivers perhaps her most committed performance—the physical transformation is evident, but more impressively, she navigates Akira's psychological arc with restraint, allowing the character's trauma to simmer beneath her steely exterior rather than explode melodramatically. Gupta avoids the trap that derails similar films like *Pink* or *Phobia*, which collapse under self-righteous messaging; instead, he lets the systemic corruption—embodied brilliantly by Anurag Kashyap's ACP Rane—feel like the true antagonist. The hostel sequences, initially appearing throwaway, actually ground the narrative in teenage vulnerability, making the collision between Akira's fractured past and institutional abuse feel inevitable rather than contrived.

Where *Akira* stumbles is in its third-act execution. The protest sequence feels borrowed from the Anurag Kashyap playbook (*Ugly*, *Gangs of Wasseypur*) without the stylistic precision that director usually brings; it reads more as homage than innovation. The supporting cast, particularly the college girls orbiting Akira, remain frustratingly one-dimensional—they exist primarily to validate her righteousness rather than possess their own narrative weight. Compared to *Raazi's* tighter espionage plotting or even *Naam Shabana's* more inventive acti

Storyline

So there's this girl named Akira who witnesses something really traumatic early on—a violent acid attack—and she tries to do the right thing by helping the cops. But things go sideways when the criminal gets revenge on her, leaving her scarred. Her dad gets her into self-defense training, and when she runs into those same guys again, things get messy in a way that ends up getting her arrested and sent away for years, even though she was just defending herself.

When Akira finally gets out eight years later, she's become this tough, no-nonsense woman who's ready to take on the world. She moves to Mumbai to start college with her brother's help, but adjusting to normal life in the hostel is pretty rough for her. Meanwhile, the college is dealing with its own drama—electronics keep disappearing, and there's this corrupt cop named ACP Rane who's basically a walking lawsuit waiting to happen, throwing his power around without any consequences.

Things come to a head when Rane's abuse of authority finally pushes the students to organize and protest, though things get intense pretty quickly. Around the same time, Rane shows his true colors by doing something absolutely despicable that puts him on the wrong side of the law in a major way. One of the girls at the college, Maya, happens to be in a position where she might have information about what Rane's really up to, and that's when things start getting really interesting and complicated.
