Gulzar's "Agar... If" is a masterclass in psychological suspense that transforms a simple premise—a stranger's arrival at a wealthy household—into an increasingly claustrophobic nightmare of guilt and paranoia. The film's central conceit is deceptively elegant: what begins as moral transgression quickly metastasizes into something far more sinister, with each lie necessitating another until the protagonist finds himself ensnared in a web entirely of his own making. Rajesh Khanna delivers a career-defining performance as Anil, conveying the subtle erosion of a man's composure with remarkable nuance—from initial suspicion to outright desperation. The direction maintains an almost unbearable tension throughout, using the palatial setting not as mere backdrop but as a gilded prison from which escape becomes increasingly impossible. The noir-influenced narrative suggests comparisons to Hitchcock's deliberate manipulation of audience complicity, asking us to understand, if not condone, Anil's descent.

Where "Agar... If" truly excels is in its refusal to offer easy answers or cathartic resolution. The blackmail subplot unfolds with mathematical precision, each revelation stripping away another layer of control until Anil's desperation becomes palpable. Storyline

Anil's comfortable life in Bombay takes an unexpected turn when a mysterious stranger named Vijay rescues his son from drowning and charitably refuses payment. The grateful Agarwals invite Vijay into their palatial home, but their friend Daver soon warns them that this charming guest has been making moves on his wife Suman. What starts as Anil's suspicion hardens into certainty when he catches Vijay getting dangerously close to his own wife Anju, forcing him to demand the houseguest leave immediately.

Things spiral violently out of control when Daver barges in accusing Vijay of a full-blown affair with Suman, and a heated argument explodes into a brutal fight that ends with Anil striking Vijay fatally on the head. Desperate to cover their tracks, Anil and Daver quietly dispose of the body and swear never to speak of it—but their secret unravels when a demand letter arrives from someone named Ashok Saxena claiming Vijay owes him one lakh rupees. Anil frantically pays off this debt in Poona, only to find himself tormented by mysterious phone calls from a man named Chaman who insists he knows everything about Vijay's disappearance.

Just when Anil thinks he's managed to contain the nightmare, another man shows up at his door claiming to be the real Ashok Saxena, and the walls completely collapse around him. Caught in a suffocating maze of lies, blackmail, and deception, Anil realizes he's utterly trapped with no way out—a chilling reminder that some secrets are too dark to ever bury.
