5/10Critic Score

There's a compelling premise buried within "22 Yards"—the story of a man watching his carefully constructed world crumble, examining the murky intersection of ambition, commerce, and sports management. Barun Sobti brings genuine passion to his role as a cricket-obsessed sports agent, and you can feel the authenticity in his portrayal of someone who truly loves the game. The film attempts something meaningful by peeling back the glamorous facade of the sports industry to expose the cutthroat business machinations underneath. In moments, particularly when exploring the moral compromises athletes and agents make, there's real emotional weight here—the kind of story that should resonate with anyone who's ever seen their ideals clash with harsh reality.

Yet the execution falters significantly where it matters most. Despite Sobti's committed performance, the narrative loses its way, becoming fragmented and unable to sustain the tension that should define a fall-from-grace story. Director Mitali Margdarshi struggles to balance the intimate personal drama with the larger commentary on the sports industry, and the result feels neither fully character-driven nor sufficiently investigative. The film's inability to maintain narrative momentum or emotional coherence means that what could have been a gripping exploration of corruption and disillusionment instead becomes a sluggish, meandering affair that never quite earns the weight of its protagonist's downfall.

Storyline

So this movie follows this really accomplished guy who works as a sports agent—basically he's the guy who manages talented athletes and helps them make deals. He's doing pretty well for himself, living the high life, all successful and respected in his field. But then things start going downhill for him in a major way, and we watch as his whole world kind of falls apart.

The film is really interesting because it doesn't just focus on the drama of his personal collapse. Instead, it gets into the nitty-gritty of how the sports industry actually works behind the scenes. It explores all the business stuff, the money deals, and how commercialization plays a huge role in cricket and athlete management. It's like a peek behind the curtain at how things really operate.

Barun Sobti plays the main character, and he's perfect for the role since his character is genuinely passionate about cricket and really knows the game inside and out. He's not just some random agent—he actually cares about sports and the athletes he represents. Watching his journey throughout the film as everything shifts around him is definitely the core of what makes this story worth following.
