B. S. Ranga was a true multi-hyphenate of Indian cinema who spent nearly seven decades making waves across Kannada, Telugu, and Tamil films. Born in Mysore in 1917, this versatile filmmaker wore multiple hats as a director, producer, cinematographer, and screenwriter, racking up an impressive 87 films to his credit. He became particularly renowned for his work in Kannada cinema, where he directed 18 films and collaborated frequently with the legendary matinee idol Dr. Rajkumar. Beyond just making movies, Ranga also owned and operated Vikram Studios, cementing his position as one of the industry's most influential power players during Indian cinema's golden era. What set Ranga apart was his ability to navigate regional cinema with equal finesse—a rare skill that made him a bridge between different film industries at a time when they operated more in silos. His eye for cinematography brought visual sophistication to projects that might have otherwise been routine, while his work as a screenwriter and producer showed he understood storytelling at every level. Though Ranga's name doesn't always dominate the conversation around Bollywood legends, his legacy speaks volumes about the cross-pollination of talent that built Indian cinema. He lived to be 93, passing away in Chennai in 2010, leaving behind a body of work that represents a crucial chapter in how regional Indian films were made and distributed during cinema's most formative years.
