
Sulochana Latkar
Born: 30 July 1928
Sulochana Latkar was a powerhouse of Indian cinema who spent nearly five decades lighting up screens in both Hindi and Marathi films. Born in Belgaum in 1928, she went on to act in around 250 Hindi films and 50 Marathi ones, becoming a beloved fixture in Indian households. Early in her career, she commanded lead roles in acclaimed Marathi films like Sasurvas and Vahinichya Bangdya, proving her acting chops before transitioning to become the quintessential "mother" figure in Hindi cinema from 1959 onwards. Her contributions didn't go unnoticed—she was honored with the Padma Shri in 1999 and the Maharashtra Bhushan in 2009, cementing her legacy as one of cinema's most decorated actors. What made Sulochana truly special was her ability to bring warmth, wisdom, and quiet strength to every role she played, especially those mother characters that became her trademark. She had this gift for making you believe in the heart of a family, whether she was a protective matriarch in a Hindi drama or carrying entire Marathi films on her shoulders as a lead. Her work spanned from the late 1940s right through the 1990s, keeping her relevant across generations and genres. Awards & Nominations
Latkar was a recipient of the civilian honour of Padma Shri (1999). She was awarded the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. In 2009, she was awarded the Maharashtra Bhushan Award by the Government of Maharashtra. In 2021 she Received Filmfare Marathi Lifetime Achievement Award For Her Contribution in Marathi Cinema.
