There's a delightful simplicity to this romantic romp that, while occasionally creaking under the weight of its own contrivances, demonstrates a genuine affection for the comedy of mistaken identity. Sunil Dutt commits fully to the physical and verbal gymnastics required of his role, transforming himself convincingly across each uncle's domain—whether as a pious scholar or a theatrical virtuoso. Waheeda Rehman carries the romantic center with grace, her chemistry with Dutt suggesting real warmth beneath the plot mechanics. Director Vijay Bhatt manages to keep the narrative moving briskly enough that we forgive the repetitive structure; each uncle's eccentricity is milked for laughs without feeling entirely exhausted by the third iteration.
What prevents this from becoming a minor classic is the thinness of the emotional stakes. The film knows it's playing in the shallow end of the pool, and while that's not inherently a flaw, the script never quite finds the tender moments that would make us genuinely invested in whether Sunil wins Sushma's hand. The contrivance of the ending—where all four uncles suddenly become magnanimous after the boy disappears—feels rushed, as though the writer ran out of ideas rather than building toward a earned resolution. Still, there's craftsmanship here in the performances and in the pacing; Bhatt understands comedy requires rhythm, and he rarely loses it.

Storyline
The film is a light-hearted comic love story, wherein Sunil Dutt falls in love with a "phool" Sushma(Waheeda Rehman) but has to impress her four uncles, the "kante" (thorns) of the title. Each uncle has a different idiosyncrasy and Sunil Dutt pretends to be an expert in that field in order to impress that particular uncle. First Uncle Dhumal a religious fanatic he pretends as a religious scholar (Vidyartthi). Second Uncle David an acting fanatic he impresses as a versatile Actor. The four uncles select their protégé for their niece, not knowing that each is selecting the same boy. When the boy whom they have approved disappears, they agree to marry their niece off to her choice, who is Sunil Dutt again.
