Rakhee Gulzar
Born: 15 August 1947
Raakhee Gulzar is one of Hindi cinema's most celebrated leading ladies, having dominated the screen throughout the 1970s and 80s with her magnetic presence and nuanced performances. Beginning her journey with the Bengali film Badhu Bharan in 1967, she quickly made her mark in Hindi cinema with memorable roles in classics like Daag: A Poem of Love, Kabhi Kabhie, and the iconic Shakti. Her talent earned her two National Film Awards and three Filmfare Awards, cementing her status as one of Bollywood's greatest actresses. In 2003, the Indian government honored her with the Padma Shri, the country's fourth-highest civilian award—a testament to her significant cultural impact. What set Raakhee apart was her ability to bring depth and emotional authenticity to every character, whether playing a romantic lead or a strong mother figure. She gracefully transitioned through different phases of her career, continuing to deliver powerful performances in films like Baazigar, Border, and Karan Arjun well into the 90s. Beyond her on-screen work, Raakhee married celebrated poet and lyricist Gulzar in 1973, and their daughter Meghna Gulzar has gone on to become an accomplished director and writer in her own right. Even as she's taken on fewer projects in recent years, Raakhee's legacy remains an integral part of Bollywood's golden era, inspiring generations of actors with her craft and grace.
