Jaspal Bhatti

Jaspal Bhatti

Born: 3 March 1955

Jaspal Bhatti was the sharp-witted satirist who basically owned Indian television comedy in the late '80s and early '90s. Starting his career in 1985, this Amritsar-born genius created iconic shows like Flop Show, Full Tension, and the hilarious mini-capsule series Ulta Pulta on Doordarshan that had everyone talking. He earned the titles "King of Comedy" and "King of Satire" for a reason—his shows weren't just funny, they were brutally honest takedowns of everyday corruption, red-tapism, and nepotism that actually made people think. Beyond the screen, Bhatti was a genuine crusader against corruption in Chandigarh, putting his money where his mouth was. The ultimate recognition came in 2013 when he was posthumously honored with the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian award, cementing his legacy as more than just an entertainer. What made Bhatti special was his ability to blend comedy with social commentary in a way that felt natural and urgent. He didn't do slapstick or over-the-top characters—instead, he used satire as a weapon to expose the absurdities of the system, making audiences laugh while simultaneously waking them up to real issues. His work throughout his 27-year career (1985-2012) influenced a generation of Indian comedians and proved that you could be hilarious and meaningful at the same time. While his later work didn't reach the same cultural phenomenon status as his Doordarshan era, Bhatti remained a fearless voice right until his death in 2012, leaving behind a body of work that's still referenced by anyone who grew up watching genuinely intelligent Indian television.
