5/10Critic Score

Anurag Basu's *Yeh Hai Bakrapur* attempts something admirably ambitious—a satirical exploration of religious zealotry, superstition, and societal hysteria through the deceptively simple lens of a village's obsession with a goat named Shahrukh. The premise itself is wickedly clever, reminiscent of the absurdist social commentary we've seen in films like *PK* or *Oh My God*, where an inanimate object (or in this case, an animal) becomes a mirror to society's irrationality. However, the execution falters considerably. While the film's intentions to critique dogmatism and blind belief are noble, the narrative becomes increasingly muddled, sacrificing coherence for forced whimsy. The performances, though earnest, struggle against a screenplay that doesn't quite know whether it's pursuing dark comedy, satire, or drama, ultimately landing in an awkward middle ground where none of these tones feel earned or resonant.

What *Yeh Hai Bakrapur* gets right is its visual presentation of village life and the ensemble cast's commitment to their roles, particularly in capturing the desperation and delusion that drives ordinary people to extraordinary superstition. Yet the film's climax—which promises to crystallize all the preceding mayhem into meaningful commentary—instead feels scattered and underdeveloped, leaving audiences with intellectual threads rather than a cohesive statement. Basu's direction lacks the satirical bite necessary to make this concept sing; *Badhaai Ho* or even *Khosla

Storyline

So basically, this film dives deep into all these intricate belief systems you find across Indian society and how they clash with each other. It's got some really thought-provoking stuff going on beneath the surface, exploring these conflicts that come up when different worldviews collide.

The story centers on the Qureshi family and their pet goat, who somehow becomes this unexpected celebrity in their village and spreads beyond it too. This goat, named Sharukh, basically gets treated like a rockstar, and before you know it, everyone's trying to get their hands on him for various reasons. It's pretty wild how this simple animal becomes the center of so much attention and chaos.

The movie builds up all this craziness and tension around this goat, and eventually everything comes to a head in the climax where all the madness reaches its peak. There's definitely more to unpack here than just a quirky story about a famous goat, and the ending ties together all the earlier mayhem in an interesting way.
