5/10Critic Score

Uran Khatola arrives as a peculiar artifact—a period fantasy that gestures toward the audacity of something like *Padmaavat* or even the theatrical ambition of early Sanjay Leela Bhansali, yet stumbles in its execution. The premise itself is intriguing: a matriarchal kingdom ruled by a goddess-worshipping culture presents fertile ground for exploring power dynamics and desire through an unconventional lens. However, the film struggles to decide whether it's a romantic thriller or a mythological fantasy, and this tonal confusion undermines what could have been a genuinely compelling love triangle. The secret-identity gambit—Soni disguised as a boy—echoes *Jai Bhim* era storytelling, but lacks the narrative discipline to make the deception feel anything but contrived.

The performances appear caught between restraint and overstatement, particularly in how the three leads navigate their characters' competing claims on Kashi. Where a film like *Kabali* weaponized its central tension with operatic intensity, Uran Khatola seems uncertain about the melodrama it's inheriting. The direction shows occasional visual flair in depicting the women-ruled city, yet the cinematography and production design never fully convince us of this alternate world—it feels constructed rather than lived-in. The film's fatal flaw lies in its inability to make the stakes feel organic; we're told the city's fate hangs in the balance, but the emotional weight never translates beyond d

Storyline

Kashi's plane crashes into this wild, women-ruled city where everyone worships a goddess named Sanga, and boom—he's saved by the absolutely stunning Soni, who takes him home to meet her widowed dad and brother Hira. He's stuck there because the roads are blocked, so he's gotta get clearance from the all-powerful Raj Rani, the queen who literally runs everything. When he meets her, she's instantly captivated—she thinks he's charming as hell and invites him to her palace to sing, and naturally, he becomes her prized guest.

But here's where it gets juicy: Kashi and Soni have already fallen hard for each other, and they're sneaking around meeting in secret with Soni disguised as a dude named Shibu to throw everyone off the scent. The tension is electric because neither of them can openly claim him, and the stakes keep climbing with every stolen moment. It's this thrilling game of cat and mouse where one wrong move could blow everything wide open.

Both women are now fighting tooth and nail to make Kashi theirs, and the entire city's fate seems to hinge on who wins his heart. The chemistry between all three characters is absolutely crackling as secrets threaten to spill, loyalties get tested, and Kashi finds himself caught between duty to the queen and true love with Soni. It's a beautifully twisted love triangle that keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole way through!
