Sneha Kapoor's Review:

"Trial Period" arrives as a refreshingly honest meditation on modern Indian family structures, one that resists the saccharine sentimentality that typically plagues such narratives. Director's treatment of Anamaya's exhaustion feels authentically rendered—the film doesn't romanticize single motherhood but instead confronts its grinding realities with unflinching compassion. The central conceit of a "trial period" papa could easily collapse into mawkish territory, yet here it functions as a clever metaphorical device exploring how we commodify intimacy in urban India. However, the execution occasionally stumbles; the screenplay's second act meanders when it should tighten, and some supporting characters feel underdeveloped, relegated to functional roles rather than fully realized presences.

The performances anchor this film firmly in emotional truth. Anamaya carries the weight of her character's vulnerability with remarkable restraint—there's no grand monologuing, just the quiet desperation of someone learning to lower her defenses. Romi's casting proves inspired; the child actor never tips into precocity or manipulation, allowing his curiosity about paternity to feel genuine rather than engineered for tears. Prajapti Dwivedi's quieter arc—a man learning that ambition means little without connection—mirrors the film's larger thesis effectively, though the chemistry between leads could have been ignited with sharper dialogue in crucial moments.

Storyline

In the sprawling chaos of Delhi, a weary mother named Anamaya navigates the relentless demands of single parenthood—work, school runs, bedtime stories—while her six-year-old son Romi sails through childhood blissfully unaware of what he's missing. But one ordinary school day, when asked to speak about his father, something shifts. The boy's innocent curiosity blooms into an audacious demand: his mother must find him a papa, and not just any papa—one available for a trial period, as if love and family were consumer goods to be tested before commitment.

Enter Prajapti Dwivedi, a straightforward, likeable man adrift in the city with nothing but ambition and an empty résumé, arriving at his uncle's doorstep in search of employment and a fresh beginning. His timing is uncanny, almost as if the universe itself had conspired to bring him into the orbit of a determined woman and her hopeful child.

What unfolds is a tender exploration of three strangers learning to occupy the same space—a man learning what it means to belong, a woman learning to trust again, and a child discovering that family isn't always born from blood but sometimes from the courage to let someone in.
