Review
Rajkummar Rao's magnetic presence nearly salvages "Toaster," a film that at least deserves credit for attempting something audaciously absurd in an industry drowning in safe formulas. The opening stretches genuinely crackle with an unhinged energy—a criminal investigation centered on a missing kitchen appliance shouldn't work, yet the film's willingness to lean into this ridiculousness initially feels refreshing. Rao carries the comedic burden with considerable charm, and when the film commits to its genuinely weird premise, there are scattered moments that justify the unconventional swing being taken.
But here's where "Toaster" falls flat on its face: it loses its nerve halfway through. What opens as darkly satirical quickly devolves into the same tired, predictable comedy beats we've seen a thousand times before. The screenplay abandons any semblance of bold storytelling, replacing its initial audacity with safe, crowd-pleasing moments that progressively suck the life out of what could have been something truly distinctive. By the interval, you're watching a film that had all the right ingredients but lacked the backbone to stay unconventional when it mattered most.
"Toaster" is a concept with potential utterly derailed by creative cowardice and inconsistent execution. It swings for the fences and bunts instead. Rating: 5.5/10
Storyline
So this guy Ramakant is basically a total miser who owns a perfume shop with his wife Shilpa. They go to a wedding and give the couple a toaster as a gift, but then the marriage falls apart almost immediately. Being the cheapskate he is, Ramakant tries to get the toaster back, but it turns out it's already been donated to an orphanage. The orphanage director won't give it back because they're already using it, so Ramakant becomes obsessed with getting his hands on it.
Things get pretty messy when Ramakant's neighbor's son Glen somehow ends up with the toaster, and then the cops show up at Ramakant's place thinking he stole it. There's all this chaos happening with the toaster being moved around, and tragedy strikes when Glen dies in an accident during a confrontation with Ramakant. Now Ramakant's stuck because an older neighbor lady saw the whole thing and decides to use what she witnessed as blackmail to get what she wants from him.
The situation spirals into a total mess as Ramakant's secret meetings with this blackmailing neighbor start destroying his marriage with Shilpa. He's out all the time, making excuses, and his wife has no idea what's actually going on. Getting desperate and running out of options, Ramakant reaches out to his perfume supplier buddy Guddu to help him figure out how to handle the blackmail problem. It's wild how far this whole toaster situation has spiraled out of control.
