6/10Critic Score

There's a tender heart beating beneath "The Secret of Devkaali," rooted in folklore and powered by genuine conviction from its cast. The film arrives as a love letter to storytelling traditions, and you can feel that passion radiating from every performance—the actors inhabit their roles with such earnestness that you wish the screenplay matched their commitment. What makes this worth your time is the final act, which proves the director absolutely knows how to deliver a moment that lands in your chest. But getting there is the struggle; the middle sections feel bloated with melodrama that undermines rather than supports the emotional journey, and the pacing meanders when it should soar, asking you to trust a story that hasn't yet earned that trust.

The tragedy of "The Secret of Devkaali" is that it's not a bad film—it's an unfinished one. There are glimpses of something truly special: craftsmanship, meaningful themes, performances brimming with soul. Yet these elements never quite coalesce into the unified whole the story deserves. You're left mourning the version of this film that might have been, frustrated by narrative choices that feel designed to manipulate rather than move. It's a film made with heart but missing the polish and discipline to let that heart shine consistently throughout.

Storyline

So there's this guy named Madhav who lives in a small village called Devkaali, and it turns out he's got this special connection to something divine that's going to help him expose secrets that have been buried for ages. The village is basically split between two rival groups—the Kring clan and the Pariyaar clan—and things get pretty messy when the village head's son, Hemant, starts taking advantage of the Pariyaar people for his own benefit, which obviously creates a ton of bad blood between everyone.

As things get worse and the injustices keep piling up, this whole legend about a Goddess who comes down to fix things and restore peace starts to feel real through Madhav's actions. It's like he becomes this vessel for something bigger than himself, and his whole journey becomes about fighting against all the corruption and cruelty happening in the village.

The core of the movie is basically Madhav's quest to get to the bottom of everything and figure out what's really going on beneath the surface of Devkaali. There's this ancient curse hanging over the village, and he's determined to break it by revealing the truth that everyone's been hiding for so long.
