The Sabarmati Report

Vivek Agnihotri's "The Sabarmati Report" arrives with commendable intent—using the Godhra tragedy as a lens to examine institutional accountability and journalistic integrity. However, noble subject matter doesn't automatically translate to compelling cinema, and this is where the film struggles most acutely. The narrative structure feels didactic rather than dramatic; scenes play like extended arguments rather than lived experiences. Vikrant Massey carries the emotional weight competently as Samar, his transformation from cynicism to conviction reasonably convincing, yet the supporting cast feels underutilized. The direction privileges exposition over tension-building, turning what could have been a gripping investigative thriller into something closer to a procedural documentary—worthy thematically, but cinematically inert in stretches.

What prevents complete dismissal is the film's refusal to sanitize its subject or offer easy resolutions. The performances, while uneven, contain moments of genuine conviction, particularly in confrontation sequences where the actors seem to find purchase in the material. Massey and Raashii Khanna share adequate chemistry, though their partnership never quite crackles with the urgency the story demands.
