Taxi Chor

Review

5/10Critic Score

"Taxi Chor" wears its pulp melodrama proudly, and there's something almost refreshing about a film that commits so fully to its twin-brother revenge saga without apology. The premise—separated siblings reunited through tragedy, driven to avenge their family—is hoary Bollywood material, yet director [unnamed] manages moments of genuine emotional weight, particularly in the mother's delayed discovery of her sons' true identities. The climactic confrontation has teeth, and the final sacrifice carries a resonance that suggests the film understands the cost of vengeance. Where the film stumbles is in its uneven pacing through the middle stretch; the criminal empire subplot feels bloated, and the character work needed to make us truly invested in these brothers' bond gets shortchanged by the plot's mechanical progression.

The performances are the film's most inconsistent element. Whoever anchors the dual role of the twins shows decent range—the singer brother has a lighter touch, the thief brother a coiled menace—but the writing doesn't give either much interiority to work with. The supporting cast, including the mother figure, often feels stranded by dialogue that tells rather than shows. The action sequences are competently mounted if unremarkable, and the film's visual language is functional rather than inspired. What keeps "Taxi Chor" from being dismissed outright is its earnest commitment to feeling; it badly wants to matter emotionally, even when the scaffolding creaks.

Storyline

A smuggler named Shamsher Singh gets arrested by a cop and vows revenge—so when the opportunity strikes, he ambushes the man's car, kills him, and scatters his three young children to the winds. One twin becomes a singer in the city living a decent life, but the other twin transforms into a hardened thief, while their younger sister is murdered in the chaos. Years pass, and these separated siblings have no idea they're connected by tragedy and blood.

When Ritesh gets busted and thrown in jail, he becomes obsessed with uncovering why he was framed—only to discover his identical twin brother Rajesh has been running a criminal empire the whole time! Their mother, wracked with suspicion, finally follows Rajesh and catches him red-handed at their sister's grave, and the shock hits her like a thunderbolt. But before anyone can process the truth, Ritesh shows up and the brothers start throwing punches, forcing their mother to step between them and reveal the horrifying story of that fateful day.

United at last, the brothers join forces to hunt down Shamsher Singh and his gang, determined to avenge their father and sister once and for all. During the explosive final confrontation, they take down the criminals one by one, but Shamsher gets in a final shot—a bullet meant for Rajesh that tears through his body instead. As Rajesh collapses into his mother's arms, he makes Ritesh promise to look after her before breathing his last, giving the film its gut-wrenching emotional payoff.
