Rajesh Masrani's "Superstar" attempts to mine comedic gold from a familiar Bollywood premise—the mistaken identity angle that has sustained countless films across decades—but the execution falters under the weight of underdeveloped characters and a script that mistakes chaos for narrative momentum. The central conceit of Kunal deputizing for the real Karan Saxena has potential, and there are moments where the Bangkok setting offers visual relief from Mumbai's mundane struggle narrative. However, the film squanders these opportunities through uneven pacing and a reliance on slapstick that feels dated rather than charming. Lead actor Arjun Mathur brings earnestness to Kunal's desperation, but the screenplay doesn't provide sufficient depth to elevate his performance beyond surface-level aspirational dramatics. The supporting cast—particularly in the girlfriend and parental roles—feels underutilized, reduced to mere plot devices rather than fully realized characters who might anchor emotional stakes.

Storyline

So there's this guy Kunal who lives in Mumbai with his parents and has always dreamed of making it big in Bollywood since he was a kid. His dad's pretty against the whole acting thing, but his mom and his girlfriend Mausam are totally supportive of his ambitions. He's been struggling to land decent roles, just doing small theater stuff, but he's never given up on his dream.

One day, everything changes when he gets mistaken for Karan Saxena, this famous actor who's supposed to star in his dad's big production. Turns out Karan's terrified of heights and can't actually do the role, so Kunal jumps at the opportunity to fill in for him. He even gets to travel to Bangkok with the whole film crew, which feels like his big break is finally happening.

But then things get weird and complicated when the news breaks that Karan's been hurt and Kunal's supposedly died in a car crash. It's pretty chaotic, and suddenly everything that looked like Kunal's dream coming true turns into this huge mess that nobody saw coming.
