Madhur Bhandarkar's "Saat Hindustani" is an ambitious period drama that channels genuine passion for an underexplored chapter of Indian history—the flag-hoisting missions in Portuguese-occupied Goa. The film's greatest strength lies in its ensemble cast, who collectively breathe life into these nationalist misfits with commendable sincerity. The chemistry between the seven protagonists feels earned rather than manufactured, and there's a palpable sense of camaraderie that anchors the more operatic moments. Bhandarkar demonstrates a clear affection for his source material, and his direction occasionally captures the frenetic energy of underground resistance movements, particularly in the sequence-building of the flag-hoisting operations themselves.

However, the film stumbles in its execution where it counts most. The narrative, while conceptually strong, suffers from uneven pacing—it oscillates between explosive action and drawn-out character moments without finding consistent rhythm. Some performances shine (the quieter, introspective turns work better than the shouty revolutionary speeches), while others feel theatrical in ways that undercut the material's inherent gravitas. The Portuguese colonial antagonists remain frustratingly one-dimensional, robbing the film of moral complexity that could have elevated it beyond a straightforward heroes-versus-villains arc. Technical craft is competent but not inspired; cinematography captures the colonial landscape adequately without

Storyline

Anwar Ali, a fiercely talented Muslim poet from Bihar, connects with five other men from across India—each bringing their own faith and regional flavor to this audacious dream. They're joined by Maria, a fierce Goan woman who knows the Portuguese-occupied territory like the back of her hand, and together these seven misfits become unstoppable. This ragtag crew of nationalists decides to strike at the heart of colonial rule by hoisting the Indian flag on Portuguese forts and buildings, turning Goa into a symbol of resistance that'll inspire the entire nation!

But hoisting flags isn't just about courage—it's about dodging bullets, betrayals, and a Portuguese colonial system that won't go down without a brutal fight. Every mission gets riskier, every moment more explosive, and the stakes keep climbing as the authorities close in with vengeance in their eyes. Friendships fracture under pressure, and Maria finds herself questioning whether anyone will make it out alive, let alone see their dream realized.

What these seven heroes pull off becomes legendary—their acts of defiance ripple across Goa and inspire a whole movement that Portugal can't crush no matter how hard they try. Some fall, some survive, but their sacrifice becomes the spark that ultimately sets Goa free. It's a breathtaking reminder that sometimes the most ordinary people, united by an extraordinary vision, can shake the foundations of an empire!
