5/10Critic Score

When "Rock On 2" stumbles into existence, you can feel the weight of nostalgia crushing what could have been a genuine exploration of second chances. Abhishek Kapoor's direction lacks the raw energy that made the original so vital—instead, we get a fractured narrative that can't decide whether it's telling the story of a broken band's reunion or a romance between two musicians who deserve far better material. Arjun Rampal carries the emotional burden of Adi's redemption arc with sincerity, but his performance feels stranded in a film that keeps cutting away to subplots that don't land. Farhan Akhtar and Purab Kohli try to inject life into their respective characters, but they're fighting against a script that treats their friendship and history as mere set dressing. The reunion itself—which should have been cathartic—arrives with all the impact of a greeting card, unearned and hollow.

What truly disappoints is how the film squanders its music. In a story fundamentally about connection through art, the songs feel obligatory rather than organic, and that's a cardinal sin for a rock film. The subplot involving Jiah and Uday, meant to echo the original's spirit, instead feels like a distraction that divides our attention without enriching the main narrative. There's a genuine story here about artists trying to reclaim what they've lost—to themselves, to each other—but the execution is so scattered, so desperate to please everyone at once, that it connects with no one. Storyline

So basically, eight years after the band Magik won this big comeback contest as a tribute to their late member Rob, we catch up with what everyone's been doing. The drummer KD and guitarist Joe are doing pretty well these days—Joe's crushing it as a judge on a reality show and they're even business partners running a club together. But here's the thing: Adi, the band's lead singer, had to leave the city years ago because of some really heavy stuff and he's been living quietly in a small town up in Meghalaya ever since.

Meanwhile, there's this young music programmer named Jiah whose dad was this super respected sarod player everyone called Guruji. A guy named Uday shows up wanting to learn sarod from her father, and even though Guruji's hesitant at first, things start to click between Jiah and Uday as they work together. There's clearly some tension in Guruji's past that's making him struggle, but the two young people are really connecting over their love of music.

Here's where things get interesting—Uday ends up taking a CD of Jiah's music recording and bringing it to the Club Bar & Blues studio without really thinking about what might happen. This seemingly random action sets off this whole chain reaction that starts bringing the Magik band members back together in ways nobody could've predicted. And just to add to everything, Joe and KD decide to surprise Adi on his birthday with a visit that includes their whole families!
