Ranchi Diaries

Ranchi Diaries attempts to juggle too many narrative threads and botches nearly all of them. The premise—a talented girl fleeing political harassment who then pivots into bank robbery—could have been incisive social commentary, but instead it's a tonally confused mess that can't decide whether it's a crime thriller, a coming-of-age drama, or a commentary on small-town desperation. Director Vishal Mishra treats every plot point with the same heavy hand, lending equal weight to Gudiya's musical ambitions and her sudden criminal enterprise, which results in a disjointed experience that asks the audience to care about contradictory character arcs. The performances are competent enough to be watchable but not compelling enough to compensate for the script's fundamental weaknesses—there's no real chemistry between the leads, and the supporting cast feels like they're shuffled in and out to fill runtime.

What's most frustrating is the squandered potential of the Ranchi setting and the issues it could have explored. Instead of mining genuine tension from the collision of ambition, patriarchal violence, and economic desperation, the film settles for melodrama and contrived action beats. The bank heist itself—the supposed centerpiece—is executed with all the urgency and planning of a badly improvised sketch. Technically, the film is competent: cinematography is serviceable, editing moves things along briskly enough, but none of it feels earned or motivated by character or story logic.
